Dermatology Treatment

Skin is the largest organ our bodies have, and how we live our lives plays a large impact on its appearance. Whether you have acne, eczema, sun damage, scars, or melasma, an experienced dermatologist has the knowledge and solutions to help you and your unique skin issue.

One of the most common skin conditions in the U.S. is acne, which affects an estimated 17 million people in our country alone. Acne occurs when pores are clogged on a person’s face, chest, back, neck, or upper arms. While acne is not a life threatening problem, it can cause low self-esteem by making one feel self-conscious about their appearance. It can also cause scarring if it is severe enough, further damaging confidence. Dr. Peter Malouf is highly trained in the practice of laser dermatology, which uses lasers or other light devices to remove excess oil and dead skin cells, thus helping unclog the pores. Patients usually show improvement after just a few sessions, but progress is often dependent on the severity of the acne. After a consultation is complete, it can be determined if this treatment may work for you better than conventional acne treatments that involve washes and creams.

Eczema can be a difficult diagnosis for many patients to swallow, as there is no cure for it. This disorder affects over 30 million Americans, and its symptoms include itchy skin, scaly patches, and rashes. It is unknown what the exact trigger eczema is, but it has been shown that many people are triggered by certain foods, allergens, and soaps/detergents. Once these triggers have been determined, a customized treatment plan can be developed specifically for the patient. If avoiding these irritants is not successful, ointments and creams can be used to relieve itching. Phototherapy can also be used, which uses different types of lights to help accelerate bacteria-fighting systems in the skin, calm inflammation, and reduce itch. Phototherapy can significantly improve the comfort of a patient during a flare up, but often requires 2-3 treatments per week to be effective.

Keloids are large scars that are built from excess collagen, often occurring after an injury, surgery, acne, or chickenpox outbreak. While this is not a life threatening issue, keloids can cause itching, pain, and be unsightly to look at. Treatment options vary based on size and location of the scar but can be treated with steroid injections spaced about a month apart. Once the injections are complete itching, redness, and scar visibility should be decreased. In other cases, Superficial Radiation Treatment can be used to destroy the collagen cells that cause keloids. This procedure is growing in popularity because it only takes a few minutes and is pain-free.
